MBA & Business School Preparation

How to get into elite and top-tier business programs

.

Contrary to popular opinion, most top-tier MBA programs and business schools do not want students with undergraduate degrees in business. As many business leaders on Wall Street attest, people with undergraduate degrees in business are generally considered to be "idiots."

In reality, an MBA is unnecessary for success in business. Many, if not most, of the most successful business leaders in the world do not have MBAs. The only real advantage of an MBA program is that it gives you an opportunity to network and make contacts.

MBA programs want well-rounded, articulate and cultured individuals. The best preparation for a top MBA program is an undergraduate degree from an elite institution with a major in the humanities or hard sciences.

Most great business leaders have been cultured, visionaries, and well-rounded. Many great businessmen in the early 20th Century were active contributors to the Loeb Library.

Best preparation for top MBA programs:

1) One should have at least 2 years of college Latin, preferably 4. Studies show that at least two years of Latin not only increases one's vocabulary by 20,000 words, but also makes one an articulate, cultured and meticulous user of the English language. (Texts.)

2) One should be well-read and articulate. One should be able to quote many of the greatest works of the Western Canon. See Reading List.

3) One should have a good sense of history. All business and economic trends are historical, and a good understanding of history will better allow one to understand these developments. See Reading List.

4) One should achieve a very broad undergraduate liberal arts education.

5) Read this article by John Train. (Click here.)

Best undergraduate degrees for admission into elite MBA programs:

1) Latin

2) Classics (Classical Greek and Latin)

3) Philosophy, esp. Ethics

4) History (a serious history program -- which does political, military and intellectual history -- not a "politically-correct" one).

5) Mathematics

6) Physics

7) Modern Languages
